Miyajima is one of Japan's three most scenic sites, a UNESCO World Heritage island known to the world for its floating torii gate at Itsukushima Shrine. What tourists crowding the ferry don't see is the route that runs beyond Tsutsumigaura, past the cherry trees in bloom, along ocean-view stretches where wild deer outnumber spectators. The 15km course climbs 120 meters of elevation through trails that test even experienced runners, while the 5km offers a gentler path perfect for those who want the island's beauty without the punishment. You'll finish with legs tired and lungs full of sea air, then collect your finisher towel and two Miyajima momiji manju from the local confectionery association—twelve different makers, flavors you've likely never tried. This is the island as only a thousand runners per year get to know it.
